It's An Ugly Game (10.25.02)

Sure it was staring me in the face the whole time, but I just now figured out what's wrong with politics, it's the politicians.

In any social gathering the only political opinion that is shared by all is that politicians can't be trusted. On the honesty scale they're right there with tobacco company lawyers. But what are you gonna do, they're just playing the game like anyone else. They're not even the ones making the decisions, the people pulling the strings are the ones who bought the election.

Prime example: in the U.S. George. W Bush forgets about 9/11 and now wants to go to war with Saddam at all costs - obviously because his daddy and the other Texas oil barons say so.

Provincially the Liberals had to gut healthcare and kill the handicapped because their investors wanted tax breaks.

However, on the municipal level it's a bit different. Here the common citizen has a chance.

Although more often than not the organized money gets the seat. For the last three years Squamish has been run by politicians that have created such a violently lopsided playing field that someone fighting for "balance" is immediately on the other team.

Saying Paul Lalli, Corinne Lonsdale and Wendy Magee aren't in bed together blatantly goes against three years of obvious gang voting history. Every vote was like clockwork. Only Raj Kalhon and Shelly Smith had the courage to vote for balance, but were beaten time and time again.

Squamish is a small town, everyone knows who lives, drinks, and votes together. Paul for mayor and Corrine on council? Brilliant! Wendy was a bit of a surprise but her sneaky entrance through the back door also shows some big chair savvy. I must admit that I've admired Paul Lalli's skill for quite some time now. He's gone from fresh-faced keener to Ottawa-bound slick in only three elections.

His charm and finesse power is undeniable. And not a day goes by I don't wish he'd use that power for good.

If you can walk down deserted Cleveland Avenue with pride and think things are going great in our town I'd like two of whatever you had. If you can see the beauty in this jewel of a town and you want this jackassery to end you have only four days to do it.

Write this down NOW! You MUST harass everyone you know to vote Nov. 6 at Muni Hall (that's the first advance poll). Go vote that day yourself, then drag people on the 8th and 9th (That's Friday and Saturday respectively) then the big day on the 16th at the Rec Centre.

I know it's a pain in the ass to get out of that comfortable rut we're in but if you ever thought, "there's so much potential" then get off your ass and make it happen.

Power to the people y'all.
